Chests And Dressers

Dressers and chests have historically been used as bedroom furniture for storing and safekeeping clothes and personal effects. Whether you need storage for your everyday clothes or you’re looking for a chest to squirrel away stuff for the future, with the availability of so many beautiful pieces on the market today, you’re certain to find something that fits your lifestyle.

Sturdy, Stylish Storage

Dressers

Traditionally, dressers were used to hold any clothing items that were not otherwise stored in a closet. Today, in addition to clothing, dresser drawers hold make-up, jewelry, mementos, picture frames – just about anything that people want to keep tucked away in a special place.

Dressers tend to fall into in one of two categories: Waist- or bench-high dressers, and shoulder-high dressers. Both styles offer a flat surface on top for displaying vanity or decorative objects like perfume or jewelry. Waist-high dressers usually have a mirror on top and can double as dressing tables.

Most bedroom dressers are rectangular in shape and are available with anywhere from 5 to 7 drawers, depending on the size of the dresser. The method for pulling the drawers out for access to their contents can be as original and creative as you are, with several different pull options available, including a staggering variety of drawer pulls. Even factory issue drawer pulls vary widely in shape and design, ranging from round wooden knobs to intricate metal or wrought iron handles.

Chests

Although sometimes thought of as the same as and interchangeable with dressers, most chests are lower than the average dresser and are intended as accent pieces as much as storage items. Whether ornamented and decorated or beautiful in natural wooden hues, many chests are not relegated only to bedrooms, and can provide attractive storage in any room in the house, depending on the type and style of chest it is.

Some chests, although appearing nothing like a dresser, are bedroom-specific. Similar to trunks, these items are large and spacious, often consisting of one large open compartment, accessed from the top, which opens on a hinge. Some people use chests to store linens and blankets, some people prefer to use their chest to stash their most important memories. A “hope chest” is a chest used, often by girls, to store items they will use one day in their own home. Although this tradition is becoming less common, chests are as popular as ever for storing important items, whether they’re being used now or intended for the future.

Smaller chests, with safety glides and no locks, make an excellent place to store children’s toys. Your kids can even use the chest for sitting on when closed.

Once you decide what kind of chest or dresser is right for you, enjoy looking at all of the options available. You might be inspired to use the attractive storage and convenience of dressers and chests throughout your home!
