Classic furniture design has come to mean two different things, depending on whom you speak to. It refers either to the traditional look or classic modern design, but both are quite different in look and feel, although they are equally beautiful furniture styles.
The Traditional Look
Springing from many sources including Colonial furniture styles, Queen Anne’s reign and antique Roman pieces, traditional classic furniture designs are often crafted from hardwoods like mahogany and cherry. Tending toward the decorative, this style is often more ornamented and embellished than other kinds of furniture. A perfect compliment to the elegant and stately home, traditional classic furniture is sturdy and has a strong presence.
Modern Classics
Sleek, sophisticated, and totally contemporary, the term “Modern Classic Furniture” describes a style of home furnishing that is influenced by the Modern Movement (also known as Modernism). Manufactured from the late 19sth century through the present, modern classic furniture designs put an emphasis on clean lines and simplicity. The designers from this era frequently hail from the Bauhaus School, and often share a similar design philosophy.
Some of the best known and influential of the modern classic furniture designers include Charles Eames (known for the Alu Chair), Le Corbusier (famous for his LC2 Armchair and Chaise Longue), Mies Van Der Rohe (renowned for his Barcelona furniture design), and Eileen Gray (designer of the Lota couch and Bibendum chair).
Making the choice between traditional classic furniture designs and modern classic furniture designs should be based on which period is most aesthetically pleasing to you. Both old and new classic pieces are built with a reputation for quality and should last for generations. Traditional classic furniture designs are almost exclusively crafted of wood and upholstery or leather; modern classic furniture designs were born out of a time when innovation was celebrated in almost every curve and angle. Modern classics often utilize stainless steel and glass or new materials.
Whether you opt for modern classic furniture or traditional classic, you will be choosing furniture of distinction. |
