Dining Room Furniture

If you’ve been dreaming of dishing up delightful dinner parties or figuring out festive family feasts, there is no better way to set the tone than with new dining room furniture!

Most dining room furniture is available both individually and in 5 piece sets. Sometimes throughout the year retailers will run promotions to include two matching armchairs with a 5 piece set. These specials are often worth considering, as it is important to have at least 2 more chairs than you think necessary so unexpected guest arrivals, holiday entertaining and family gatherings don’t leave you short-seated. If you purchase extra chairs when buying the rest of your set you ensure that everything fits and coordinates, giving you piece of mind and a dining set to be proud of! When not in use, the extra chairs can be used as accent pieces or can double as office or living room furniture.

Table This

Before beginning your research on new dining room furniture, you will first want to measure the room to get a feel for the right table size. You do not want your dining room table to overpower the space, nor should you get something that is too small a fit, making the room appear like something out of Alice in Wonderland. For best results, there should be approximately four to five feet of space between the table and the wall to allow guests to move around freely and the host or hostess to walk behind diners to serve as necessary. You should also allow 24” to 30” of space between diners so people don’t bump elbows while eating – think carefully about how many guests you will be inviting over for dinner! For best results, consider a dining room table with expansion options, such as a drop leaf, flip top, or tilt top dining room table.

Have a Seat

Once you have settled on the perfect table, move onto dining room chairs. Your dining chairs should fit both the table and the people who will be sitting on the chairs! A good rule of thumb is twenty-two inches wide for an armless dining chair, but it is fine to go bigger if the space and the table warrant this. Try to steer clear of dining chairs that are narrower than 17 inches, as they are generally too small for comfort and do not provide adequate support. For best results, select chairs that are anywhere from 20-24 inches deep.

Make sure that chairs are sturdy and do not wobble. If the chair has a padded seat, the corners should be reinforced with screwed-in (not glued) corner blocks. Microfiber (also known as “Ultrasuede”) is a great choice of fabric, as it is incredibly easy to clean. Leather dining room chairs are also easy to maintain and add elegance and sophistication to any dining room.

When looking at dining chair height, try to choose chairs that are approximately 18-19 inches high. It is generally advisable to allow a minimum of 12 inches between the top of the seat and the top of the table. Diners need 18” to 24” of space away from the table to sit down and pull their chairs up to the table – an important consider if you are shopping for dining room armchairs.

Delicious Dining Room Extras

While not exhaustive, the following items add storage, extra serving space, and – above all – additional style to your dining room: Curio cabinets, china cabinets, buffets, hutches, sideboards, servers. There is no need to purchase the extras all-at-once; purchased over time you can watch as your home transforms into the type of entertaining oasis you’ve always dreamed of.
