Cowhides are too thick to upholster furniture, so they must be split into thinner layers. The two resulting pieces are classified as either top grain and split grain.
Once split, the surface layer is referred to as the top grain. It is the strongest, most resilient part of the hide. It also happens to be the silkiest and softest part of the hide.
The lower layer on the hide is called split leather. It is not as pliable or durable as top-grain leather, but can be used for parts of the leather chair furniture that are mostly out of view, such as the back.
